Puppies

If you are on the lookout for a puppy there are some things you can do;
-
When you enquire about a puppy let us know as much info about your home, family, children, other pets, town or farm life. My puppies only go to homes I feel are a good fit for them.
-
I am small scale breeder and not a puppy farmer, my babies only go to the most loving pet homes.
-
I cannot control when I have puppies or what sex they are.
-
I would love to see more yorkies in the show ring, please let me know if this interests you.
-
I am happy to point you towards other breeders if you have given me enough info about yourself & family.
-
Don't ask for a teacup yorkie!!
-
My babies will come with endorsements Not to be bred from
-
I have a private facebook group Yorkies NZ, I can tag or point you in the right direction.
What you should look for from a breeder

-
Don't support puppy farms
Never buy from puppy farms - even if you feel sorry for the dog. More puppies will be bred to replace the dog you buy. It's a vicious cycle. Look for breeders who have excellent welfare standards and raise the puppies in homes, socialising them so they adapt easily to their new home environment.
In NZ the puppy farmers often "work" out of their homes so if they always have puppies available that will give you an idea, they are most likely farming.
-
Visit the breeder
Visit the breeder if possible and see the environment where the puppy is being raised. It should be comfortable and clean. The puppy should also be able to mix with people and other animals and run around
-
Meet the parents
Request the health history of the puppy's parents and ask to meet them, sometimes if a stud dog is used meeting the dog isn't possible. Consider also their temperaments and avoid those that are aggressive or overly nervous.
-
Support breeders who screen the parents for inherited diseases
It is not enough for a breeder to just take part in a health scheme, they must also use the results to access the suitability of mating the dogs. Discuss the test results with your veterinarian before you buy the puppy if you don't understand the results.
-
Check how many litter the mother has produced
Being a registered breeder means we are bound by Dogs NZ welfare rules, this means 4 registered litters is what we are allowed to do. Unfortunatly not all breeders adhere to this.
-
Check how old the mother was when mated
The risks of pregnancy complications are related to the age of the female dog. Breeding female dogs should ideally be between one and six years of age when they are mated.
-
Ensure that the puppy's health has been well managed
The puppies should be in good body condition, have had a vet check and received any vaccinations that are required.
-
Check the puppy will be over eight weeks of age when they are released to new owners
Puppies must be weaned and fully self-sufficient and at least eight weeks old before they are released to their new owners. Ten weeks is preferred for smaller breed puppies.
-
Ensure that the puppy's behavioural needs have been met
To smooth the transition to their new homes, puppies should be able to mix with people and other animals from three weeks of age.
-
Select a breeder who will provide support and follow-up care
A responsible breeder will also be knowledgeable about the breed and the care of new puppies. They will be keen to provide follow-up support.
